Normal Things – Pt. 1: Water, Waste, Home

Dear Grampa, The days of my village life are winding down and it’s become apparent that the rest of the lengthy editorials I once envisioned I’d write you will never come to full fruition – half because of the innervating heat and half because of the innervating heat. I can, however, offer you these curtailed … Continue reading Normal Things – Pt. 1: Water, Waste, Home

End of PST and Swearing-In

I have flung around a lot of guff about how difficult PST can be. I need to be honest now about how goddanged silly it can be at times. For instance, our final (optional) language review, right before our big final language exams, mind you, consisted of bubble blowing and a dragon-fruit eating contest. One of my patients stopped by with a necklace she’d made for me. She called me her angel and said she could never thank me enough for just listening because, for her, it’s the best medicine. I am infinitely grateful for my job, that even when the government has come to a screeching halt, when my landlady judges me for my rubbish-to-recycling ratio, when I haven’t showered as recently as a person should, and when I just flat out don’t have the tools to turn a patient’s situation around, I’m privileged enough to show up someplace every day where I get to be kind and gentle to others.
