Surprise School

You have a re-occurring nightmare in which your hands are dry with chalk, you’re dressed in traditional Khmer clothing, and when you spin around you face a hall of writhing school kids shouting at you in a foreign language. Except this nightmare is your job. Continue reading Surprise School

One of my patients stopped by with a necklace she’d made for me. She called me her angel and said she could never thank me enough for just listening because, for her, it’s the best medicine. I am infinitely grateful for my job, that even when the government has come to a screeching halt, when my landlady judges me for my rubbish-to-recycling ratio, when I haven’t showered as recently as a person should, and when I just flat out don’t have the tools to turn a patient’s situation around, I’m privileged enough to show up someplace every day where I get to be kind and gentle to others.
